As a leadership and well-being coach, I am always looking for sources of inspiration. And, as Providence would have it, this week I found insight from a fortune cookie; the message revealed,
“Destiny is not a destination, but a journey of self-discovery and growth.”
This bit of wisdom reminds us that life is ever changing and like a mindful traveler, we are on an exploration of learning and becoming. In a world ever flowing with opportunities and challenges, we think, feel, and choose our way. There is no right or wrong. But what happens to us depends upon the choices we do make. Making wise (good) choices keeps us positively moving forward on our journey. But how can we best set ourselves up for wise choice making? Knowing our true self is the key. Identifying our joys (strengths), struggles (weaknesses), and passions (values) allows us to understand what brings us happiness. And, when we trust to live authentically, we set meaningful goals and move toward them enthusiastically.
Knowing ourselves deeply can take a lifetime; many people never achieve it. Accepting the status quo, we task and check off our to do lists as we take care of the “daily grind.” (Which by the way, is not a term I equate with personal fulfillment). The road to self-discovery is best taken by mindfully stepping out of our comfort zone and welcoming some uncertainty into our lives. By approaching life’s challenges and opportunities with curiosity, remaining open-minded to new learnings, and adjusting our compass when we feel it is necessary, we come to best know our true selves.
Destiny is made up of many, often small, steps taken throughout our lives. Take time to reflect upon your choices and your journey. When was the last time you thought about what brings you joy? What do you struggle with most? What are you truly enthusiastic about? How can the answers to these questions best guide you on your journey?
